John Carey has been practicing in the areas of patent and intellectual property law for over twenty years and supports a broad range of clients, from larger, public companies to smaller, start-up and emerging companies. John has worked extensively with clients on developing both U.S. and foreign filing strategies and developing internal invention procurement processes and forming patent review committees. In that regard, John has served and currently serves as a patent committee member for several clients. In addition to those responsibilities, John focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution, conducting invalidity and non-infringement studies, writing formal legal opinions, and conducting substantive patent due diligence and portfolio analyses for mergers and acquisitions transactions, private equity transactions, and joint venture/development arrangements. John’s technical expertise spans multiple disciplines, including 3D computer graphics and animation, virtual reality environments, complex software, computer and mesh networking, microprocessor architectures, memory controllers, and MEMS and NEMS technologies.

While attending MIT as an undergraduate and graduate student, John focused his studies and thesis-related work in the areas of robotics and control systems design. While attending Harvard Law School, John concentrated his studies and completed his thesis-related work in the area of administrative law. John's law school thesis titled, "The FDA's Policymaking Quandary: Is Guidance Reform an Appropriate Solution?" has been cited in multiple academic and scholastic works.

Prior to founding Artegis Law Group, John was a senior partner at Patterson & Sheridan LLP and served as head of the computer science and electrical engineering practice group from 2012 through 2014. As an associate lawyer, John was a member of the IP strategies and transactions group at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and was a member of the patent and antitrust litigation groups at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.
