Bret is a seasoned patent practitioner and focuses his practice on strategic patent portfolio counseling, patent application preparation and prosecution, drafting invalidity and non-infringement opinions, and pre-litigation analysis.  Bret is adept at collaborating closely with clients to understand their technologies and business objectives and using that understanding to provide tailored advice, on both broader questions about patent portfolio strategy and narrower questions about claim and filing strategy.

Bret has specific technical expertise in the areas of computer science, programming languages, and computer networks and has drafted numerous patent applications across a variety of technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, blockchain and cryptocurrency, cloud computing, computer hardware, computer vision, data compression and encoding, data analytics and big data, data security and privacy, and graphics processing.  Over the past fifteen years, Bret has developed an impressive practice across these different technical disciplines, serving as a reliable advisor for clients ranging from high-tech start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. 

Prior to joining Artegis, Bret was an associate attorney in the intellectual property group at Dickson Wright before being promoted to Counsel.  Bret also worked as a technical advisor and patent agent at Patterson & Sheridan for a number of years with several members of the current Artegis team.
